Take a moment and think about what you feel when you think of free music downloads. Is it unethical? Are you stealing from the artist? Are you affecting the music industry? Many a record executive will tell you that on-line donloading is the main reason sales are sluggish. I want to tell you that I could not agree with that statement, nor will i ever agree. I believe a big-wig is inclined to say that becasue he/she is too proud to admit several other factors are involved in the decline of the American music industry. First, I think the biggest problem in the indistry today, which has NOTHING to do with free music downloads, is that the Record companies are signing artists that don't fulfil the needs of the consumer. Or, to put it bluntly, music SUCKS. It is heartless, plastic, sugar coated, repetitive, repetitive, oh, did I say repetitive? Musical trends are varied practically on a daily basis. I think the focus is too much on past success as opposed to feeling and understanding current trends and being tactful in preparing for future trends. It has become all about sex and sampling. Is Dave MAtthews sexy? Not really! He IS Talented and he writes a good song and he SELLS tons of albums. Good music does sell. Candy Coated music dies a quick death. So, the new question is..how do you justify innocence in dowloading music for free? Simple, I strongly believe that free music downloads is instrumental for expanding the consumer awareness of a particular group. When do you buy a whole

You hit a free movie download'>download site, movie download'>download a song or two and realize that it may be worth going out and getting that album. I believe you reach a bigger audience because no one wants to pay for something they are unfalmiliar with. Now, how does a label make up the cash if they downloader decides to downlaod the whole album for free? We'll explore that in the next paragraph... How do you combat free music downloads and turn it into revenue? Simple... merchandising and concert performances. If a fan likes the band, they will go see the show and maybe ever purchase some band-related items along the way. It is all about marketing. The music is the "sample" and with the sample you can sway the "buyer" to buy meaningless products with band names on it.
